“We’d like to retire at the beach” . . . When meeting with potential clients, I often ask, “if money were no object, where would you see yourself retiring?” The most common response is some form of “We’d like to retire at the beach.” There isn’t a close second answer, even though not everyone wants to literally retire at the beach. While some may prefer a mountain town, their hometown in the Midwest, a life in Europe or South America, it is fascinating that psychologically, most people equate their end goal to being beachfront.
When it comes to financial planning, it’s imperative to start with the end in mind. Where is it you want to go? What is it you want to accomplish? Whether your financial goals are short-term (purchasing a home or a business), mid-term (sending kids to college or buying an investment property) or long-term (selling a business or retirement), all goals start with understanding what you want to accomplish.
